Gin Rummy

DEAL

A standard deck of 52 cards is used. 10 cards are dealt out to two players. The next card in the hand is flipped face-up into a discard pile. The remaining cards make up the stock.

PLAY

The object of the game is to meld your cards into sets and sequences. A set is 3 or more cards of the same rank. A sequence is 3 or more cards of the same suit in sequence. Play begins with the non-dealer who has the chance to pick-up the top card in the discard pile or pass to the dealer who also can pick it up or pass. After picking up a card, the player has the option to knock or discard. Play continues with the opportunity to pick-up the top card of the stock or discard piles then knock or discard. To knock your deadwood, the cards not part of a set or sequence, must add up to 10 or less. The King, Queen and Jack count for 10 points, the Ace counts for 1 point and all other cards count their numeric value. If only two cards are left in the stock the game is called a draw and the hand is redealed.

SCORING - HAND

The player who does not knock has the opportunity to lay off cards by adding to the knocker's melds. Whoever has the lower deadwood count wins the difference. If the player who knocks has no deadwood they receive a gin bonus of 25 points. If the player who does not knock has a lower deadwood count they receive an undercut bonus of 25 points.

SCORING - MATCH

The first player to reach 100 points wins the hand and receives a game bonus of 100 points. If a player wins all the hands they receive a shutout bonus which doubles the points for all hands and game bonus. Each player receives 25 points for each hand they won which is called the box score. The difference between the points for each player is added to the match total. The first player to reach 500 points in the match wins.
